Review of Birds Watching Tours in Malaysia and Borneo
Excellent one day tour to Bukit Tinggi and Old Gombak Road. Loved Mr. Lee's demeanour - easy going, knowledgeable and with concern for safety (i.e. the driving) and punctuality plus not least the ability to adjust the tour to the level of the birder. There's nothing worse if you are a serious birder to have a guide who's got different ambitions for the day. All these traits are quality characteristics for any bird guide, and Endemic Guides and Mr. Lee passed with flying colours. Of course in addition to the above, the birds were fantastic, bagging some seriously good birds on top of the targets for the day. Well worth the money all around.
My wife and I took advantage of a stay in Singapore to organize a three-day birding tour to Panti Forest with Mr Liew. We are very happy with Mr Liew who proved responsive, hard_working and knew his birds so well. We would definitely recommend him and Endemic Guides as the logistics were flawless and the birds great. One final mention for the tasty local foods!
Lee gave my wife and me a memorable half-day+ tour when we visited Port Klang on the Queen Mary 2 liner. His birding knowledge is profound, and equally impressive were the insights he gave us into Malaysian history and society. He is a great ambassador for his country.

I had one day off in a hectic four days city business trip to Asia and approached Endemic Guides to see if I could fit in a day of guided birding near KL (wrapping up in time for me to catch an evening flight to Seoul). Jen Ney in the office there could not have been more helpful quickly proposing Kuala Selangor just an hour or so from the city centre and an easy drive to KLIA (where she arranged to have me dropped off late afternoon). My guide Lee was excellent from start to finish. We didn't find the Mangrove Pitta unfortunately (a good reason to go back) but otherwise enjoyed quality sightings of high premium species. We also enjoyed an excellent lunch during a break in the middle of the day. Highly recommended.
Great experience! Mr. Lee was very knowledgeable and was able to show us many different species from different habitat. He was obviously very enthusiastic about birding and we loved to hear some of his observations over the years. We would definitely recommend this trip to any bird lovers who would like to get to know the birds in Malaysia.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 9 days of birding in October 2022 under the expert guidance of Liew Weng Keong and Lee kok chung. We were taken on a journey to several impressive birding sites including Kuala Selangor, Fraser's Hill, Taiping, Merapoh and Bukit Tinggi. Both guides were most knowledgeable and skilled at finding an impressive array of species whilst patiently making sure to maximise our chance of getting the best photos which the often dense forests made quite difficult. We were also impressed with the accomodation, meals, transport and friendly, informative conversation that Endemic Guides and both our guides provided - happy to give them our recommendation.
My wife and I had a great morning and afternoon in the otherwise unpromising vicinity of Port Klang. It's an industrial area, but Mr Lee used the limited time available to take us to great spots for birding. Mr Lee was always cheerful, helpful and considerate, and he was fantastic at spotting birds, which we could then pinpoint with the help of his scope. We had no special agenda -- just a birding excursion -- but it turned out one of the best excursions of our cruise. We echo other customers in thoroughly recommending Mr Lee as an excellent bird guide. We hope we can book him again when we are next in Malaysia.
Had a fantastic 2 days with Liew. Very knowledgeable, nice and great at finding the birds and listening to requests! Will be in touch again on my next trip to Malaysia!
My wife and I had a day with Juliana Sim. She proved to be an excellent guide: really knowledgeable, especially on bird calls. We saw 26 species - could not have been better. Many thanks, Juliana!
I recently went on back-to-back tours of the Malay P. (8 days) and Sabah, Borneo (10 days). It was my good fortune to have Lee Kok Chung as a guide, especially in Sabah where I was the only client. Lee can see and hear things ordinary people cannot; his efforts and patience in making certain I saw difficult birds (I am not the best spotter) were much appreciated. He was very attentive in re my wish list of lifers. For example, on day 5 in Sabah he announced there were 59 potential lifers left for me. By the end of the trip we had seen all but a handful, which was remarkable. If his colleagues are as good as Lee is, I would recommend Endemic Guides without hesitation. And, if Lee sends Sabah bird photos as he has promised, I will award him a 6th star!
Lee lead our trip for Birdfinders. He was a very good guide, deeply knowledgeable, helpful, good company and very hard-working. I personally saw over 250 species, of which 180 were lifers, including Mangrove and Garnet Pitta, Rail-Babbler and Pygmy Cupwing. We saw many lovely insects and mammals and his Lee's choice of restaurants was outstanding.
My wife and I recently went on a day trip to Fraser Hill with Lee as our guide. We had a fantastic day, saw lots of species that we were after and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lee was an excellent guide in all respects.
Many thanks,
Merlin
My days birding with Weng were excellent. In fact, had I know he operated independently, I would have used him direct. He really did know his stuff but better than that he was really excellent company, informative, affable, and able to provide much more than his expertise as a bird guide.
You’re the BEST!
Lee's bird watching guide set a very high standard that it is difficult to meet. Having over 200 species birds in 8 days in an easy way, not rush. Traveling at noon to early afternoon time which is no or less bird time, clever arrangement. No doubt, I had recommended this tour to my friends in Taiwan same as I was told by my friends who were led by Lee in 2018.
3月參加馬來西亞賞鳥,行程、住宿、餐飲安排都很用心,鳥導小劉超級專業,超級認真找鳥,此行收穫多多!
My wife and I tremendously enjoyed 2 fabulous days birding with Kok Chung Lee on a brief stop-over in Malaysia enroute to NZ. We were very impressed by Lee - he was good company, polite, timely, helpful and also chose some good restaurants for our lunch stops. He is totally familiar with all the local bird and mammal species in the area, including all the bird calls, and what really impressed us was his ability to quickly locate a species, identify it to us with the help of a laser light or scope, making sure we both got good viewing - even in deep jungle. We are not twitchers, and we asked Lee to take us to some cultural sites too, but we still recorded over 80 species with over 40 new species. We would thoroughly recommend Mr Lee, he is one of the very best bird-guides.Indeed we have booked again when we return in the spring.
Ross & Carol
I made a last minute booking, but they quickly arranged a tour for me. The guide Mr. David, was very knowledgeable on the birds and spots on where to see them.
I ended up seeing 30 species with 13 endemics including the Whitehead's Trogon.
I had a fantastic time and would recommend it to anyone.
We spent 4 days in the Royal Belum, looking for 10 hornbill species. And we did it! Thanks to Lee and Liew and all the guides. I was very excited when we heard and actually saw the Helmeted Hornbill! The tour was great. Food was great. Everything was fine. Thanks you so much!
Endemic knows their stuff. Describe your interests and they will fine the best location to accomplish your objectives. They really are experts.
Lee was superb at identifying and locating the birds. He managed the itinerary well, adapting to weather condition, and was a pleasure to be guided by
We wanted to see a selection of Malaysian forest birds and found a 3 day trip to Fraser's hill by Endemic Guides. As arranged, Mr Liew Weng Keong picked us up from out hotel and took us to Bukit Tinggi, a hilltop site. Within minutes of entering the forest Liew found our first endemic – 2 mountain peacock-pheseants along with a Ferruginous partridge. Minutes later a black eagle flew over. We then drove to Fraser's Hill where Liew kept the excitement going for all 3 days with good views of nearly all the birds that he found. I am visually impaired and Liew was determined that I saw the birds. He showed great patience which was rewarded with great success. We can thoroughly recommend Liew, nothing was too much trouble, he looked after our every need – he is an excellent guide.
I had an absolutely fantastic short trip with Mr. Liew Weng Keong. This was my first time in Malaysia and he was able to find 69 lifers for me in under two days. His knowledge and experience are exceptional. He located nearly every target species that could reasonably be expected, given such a short trip and the time of year. I will certainly recommend Endemic Guides to my friends and am looking forward to another visit.
It was the second time I got to watch bird guide Lee in action, again doing a 10 day tour, this time in Sabah, with Bellbird Tours. Like last time I was most impressed with Lee's birding skills. He is focused, patient and persistent, knows the sites and calls very well, and his eyesight is astounding, especially when looking in the dark undergrowth. Working as a bird guide myself I can say Lee is one of the best in his field. He also knows all the mammals and lots of other creatures by name too, adding to the experience. Besides being a brilliant guide he is also a great person to be with, calm, friendly, polite and easy going. I would happily recommend Lee to anyone.
Just a quick note to say what a great trip we had in Malaysia. Our guide Lee was excellently, doing all he could to make sure we all saw the birds. Consequently I had about 170 lifers. The trip was well organised, and the accommodation very good.
Best regards
Bob & Liz Wilson
Have just completed a 10 day tour with Lee through Bellbird tours
Lee was absolutely fantastic and was outstanding in finding the birds and ensuring every-one got the best views possible.
Would highly recommend Lee to anyone thinking of visiting this area, he is an outstanding guide and a great guy.
I didn't realize until I got home how many birds I had actually gotten decent photos of. I got a pictures of 35 different species in a single day tour, thanks to local knowledge of Liew of Endemic Guides who found and helped identify the birds in addition to photography tips. Will definitely be using them again.
I have now returned home after a month long holiday, including a 2 day stop-over in Malaysia. I wanted to give Endemic Guides some customer feedback, as I was so impressed by the service provided by one of your bird-guides, Mr Lee Kok Chung, on my day out birding with him in the Kuala Lumpur area on 8 December. In over 40 years of birding all over the world I have never paid for a birding guide, but I just had to maximise the birding opportunity on this short stop-over. Mr Lee was good company and was very considerate of my requests e.g selecting a restaurant that very quickly served up the lunch that I had requested (to maximise birding time). He is totally familiar with all the bird and mammal species in the area, including all the bird calls, and what really impressed me was his very skilled ability to quickly locate a species, identify it to me, and then step aside to allow me to view the bird through his ‘scope. All of this in the very seconds that we often had before the bird flew off. His choice of equipment (tapes, lightweight tripod, and telescope with a wide eye-piece and suitable field of view) were all perfect for this function. He invariably quickly got onto a perched bird in this way, but two particular occasions really impressed me. The speed that he got his ‘scope on to a female Siberian Thrush and Rufous-browed Flycatcher that were perched in deep understorey with a lot of vegetation in the way of a good field of view, were exceptionally impressive. In over eleven hours, we recorded 78 species and I was delighted to see 29 species that were new for me. I would recommend that customers send him their bird list for the area that they want to visit before their trip, as this will enable Mr Lee to precisely tailor the itinerary to one’s requirement. I thoroughly recommend Mr Lee, he must be one of the very bird-guides that you could hope to go birding with in this region.
[Lee – Thanks so much for a great day out birding with so many great birds, the images of which will stay in my mind for a very long time. I hope they give you a pay rise after they read my feedback! I’d be happy to take you out birding if ever you visit England (particularly the SW area). I’ve already recommended you to birders that I met whilst in Australia and New Zealand; some had already gone out with you or had heard of you. Best wishes for the New Year – Nick]
We had a great day birding with Mr Cheong. He is a great guide and worked hard to find birds and to help us locate them. He mentioned sending his list for the day which would be helpful as I am unsure of a couple of the birds I noted on my list.
Thanks again for a wonderful day.
I am about to fly home and want to thank you and Mr. Lee for two marvellous days of birding
Good planning and like last time Mr. Lee was excellent!
thank you again and untill next time!
We would not have seen anything if we had gone by ourselves. Mr. Lee was very skilled and professional. We loved the kaya puffs.
I would like to thank EndemicGuides for organising my 4 day stopover in Malaysia – all of the travel and hotel arrangements worked extremely well.
My guide Lee showed an impressive ability to find birds even in thick rainforest – and great patience in ensuring that I saw every bird that he did. All in all a very enjoyable 4 days and I would recommend EndemicGuides to anyone wanting a birding trip in the area.
We finally arrived in the UK on Jan 16th.
We both wanted to thank you for organising our bird trips – the one in Kuala Selangor/Frazer Hill with Lee Kok Chung and the second one in Penang with Mr Kumar.
We wanted to express our thanks to Lee Kok Chung – the 3 days were very busy but very rewarding – his enthusiasm and bird knowledge were superb and he was also excellent company with a great sense of humour. Lots of highlights on the trip with a total of 122 species identified – but especially seeing the orange breasted trogon, the gold whiskered and red throated barbet,
blue winged leafbird, chestnut capped laughing thrush, silver eared mesia and a host of other birds. We also appreciated how well Lee was organised with good bird books and a comprehensive checklist. Please use this testimonial on your website if you would like to do so.
We will certainly recommend your service to our friends back in the UK if they are planning to travel to Malaysia – we hope to get back again perhaps to Sabah and Taman Negara and would like if we do you use your services again.
Once again many thanks.
Just a note to say how much we enjoyed our trip to Sabah. Andrew was an excellent guide, and the birds were exciting. Plus we saw orangutans and many other good mammals in the wild! All accommodations were excellent as well. So we were very satisfied, and thank you very much for all your help in arranging our tour.
I shall recommend Endemic Guides to my bird watching (and other) friends.
Best wishes,
Hugh Dingle ( USA -Currently resident in Australia, 12 days birding tour in Kinabalu Park + Sepilok +SAndakan + Kinabatangan River + Danum Valley)
Now that we have arrived home, we just wanted to say thank you very much to Endemic Guides for the organisation of our 9 day 8 night bird tour. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, seeing more bird species than we had ever hoped for. This of course was due to the expert skills of our guide, Lee, who seemed to almost have the ability to call up birds whenever we needed them! His imitations of their calls was remarkable, and his equally impressive patience often delivered good views of uncommon species.
He also took good care of us: he always checked our accommodation, and advised us on food. We are still recovering from his sense of humour!!
We are very happy to recommend Endemic Guides to anyone in New Zealand who may be considering travelling to Malaysia.
We enjoyed the trip thoroughly and am impressed by the variety of birds we saw. I am certainly passing along the word about your company.
Sylvia & I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our 8-day birding trip with Lee in October. Thanks to his excellent skills we were able to see over 220 species. He also took us to some excellent chinese eating places during our stay. The remainder of our holiday in New Zealand was also brilliant and we managed to see most of the endemic birds there although, because of its remoteness, there are far fewer species than in Malaysia. Wishing you a happy and prosperous 2008.
Sorry for taking so long to write to you. We are back at work in Papua New Guinea now and things are crazy here – as usual.
Our time in Danum Valley was great. The food and the service at Borneo Rainforest Lodge were particularly outstanding. It rained heavily every afternoon we were there, so we didn’t get to do as much bird-watching as we would have liked. But we made the best of every morning and saw some really great birds. We really enjoyed ourselves.
Overall, our trip to Sabah was fantastic. I think it was the best holiday that I have ever had. We really didn’t have any complaints about anything, the whole time we were traveling.
Many thanks again to you for making our planning and our holiday work out so well. We will certainly recommend you to anybody we know who is planning a holiday in Malaysia. And we are thinking that we might go back there again within the next couple of years, so we might be in touch again. If we are ever in KL for any reason, we will certainly look for you.
(20 days tour for Kinabatangan river, Maliau Basin, Danum Valley and Tabin Wildlife reserve)
Just want to thank you for two excellent days’ birding with Lee Kok Chung, one at Fraser’s Hill and the other in the area of Kuala Selangor. On both days we saw at least 70 species (each day) of birds and a variety of other wildlife. Very good views were obtained and most of the target species were quickly discovered. I would recommend these trips to anyone interested in wildlife.
Thanks for a fantastic birding trip in Malaysia. In three days, we saw more than 95 species of spectacular birds! I was amazed by the skill and knowledge of our guide, Mr. Lee Kok Chung. He not only took us to diverse habitats and was knowledgeable about what birds we would find at each site, but he also seemed to be able to call the birds to us!
Mr. Lee appeared to be communicating with the birds through his miming of the bird calls. It was really fun and interesting. Thanks for humoring our interest in Buddist and Hindu temples by stopping off at them whenever we wished.
Just letting you know that I had an amazing birding trip with Mr. Liew. He is not only a brilliant bird guide and photographer but also a very pleasant person to travel with. He was always happy to help and assist where possible. His has an amazing amount of energy and dedication. And he is not only a bird guide but also a top birder, which makes a world of difference. I have travelled a lot before but never met a guide like him. So I will definitely be birding again with Mr. Liew in future.
Thanks too for your great help and support in preparing this trip. I will speak in high terms about your company to my birding fellows.
back in Germany I just wanted to thank you for the marvellous birding experience we had with your help and with Mr. Liew as a guide. It was all perfectly organized and we saw more birds than we had ever hoped for.
